US job cuts hit 275,240 in March 2025 the highest since the pandemic peak in 2020, surpassing the 2001 and 2008 recessions. Layoffs surge as federal cuts, led by DOGE, echo Covid era losses. It is the 3rd highest monthly total on record only March and April of 2020 the first months of the pandemic were higher and the data goes back to 1993. The cuts sanctioned by Elon Musk and Russel Vought are causing huge jobs losses across the country. Their extreme cuts are not tackling ‘efficiency’. Spending is actually up and will soar when the tax cuts to the wealthy are implemented. Federal jobs represent only a small portion of the budget and we already spend less on federal employees than other industrialized nations. The point of the cuts is to gut services and get rid of resistance to Vought’s extreme plans he outlines in Project 2025. He is sadistic and is cheering it on knowing the suffering it is causing. The services and departments that were cut were vital functions. They provided food aid, disease research, research on toxic chemicals and algal blooms, food inspections, funding for low income schools and meals on wheels among many other necessary functions. Just 4 percent of Americans viewed Project 2025 positively but it is being implemented exactly. They are purposely breaking the government to make it hard to be put back together. The extreme cuts are not being carried out in a constitutional manner involving Congress. They are setting us back decades and causing a recession by design when our economy was the envy of the world coming out of the pandemic.
