The United States has historically benefited from open trade and economic cooperation with other nations. Imposing sweeping tariffs risks causing immense economic damage by raising costs for businesses and consumers, disrupting supply chains, inviting retaliation from trading partners, and fueling inflation. Rather than unilateral protectionist measures, we should pursue fair and mutually beneficial trade agreements that expand market access and economic opportunities. Tariffs are a blunt instrument that hurt more than they help. My business will be personally impacted. The items I carry cannot be made in the US any longer. We have no mills making thread or yarn, no factories for steel pins and knitting needles, no industries producing the tools for lacemaking and needlework. These tariffs will bankrupt my company and close a small business. I urge you to reconsider this reckless course of action and instead work constructively with allies to address legitimate trade grievances through negotiation. Doubling down on tariffs will only breed more economic turmoil at a precarious time.
