An Open Letter

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Stevens

From: A constituent in Troy, MI

March 17

The Trump administration's decision to deport over 200 alleged Venezuelan gang members despite a court order blocking such action is a direct challenge to the constitutionally-mandated system of checks and balances. This defiance of the judicial branch undermines fundamental constitutional principles and the rule of law. Legal experts have rightfully criticized these actions as an unprecedented test of constitutional constraints since the Civil War era. Deporting individuals without due process and in violation of a court order sets a dangerous precedent that erodes democratic norms. The administration must immediately halt any further deportations carried out through extrajudicial means and provide full transparency regarding the operations thus far, including verifying the alleged criminal backgrounds of those deported. Failure to uphold court rulings represents a subversion of constitutional governance that cannot be tolerated in a nation built on democratic values. The administration's hardline policies cannot be allowed to trample civil liberties and the system of checks and balances that has preserved America's democracy for centuries. Accountability from all branches of government is paramount to resolving this crisis and reaffirming our nation's commitment to justice and the rule of law. Decisive action reversing this alarming overreach and restoring the balance of powers must be taken to protect the integrity of the United States' constitutional order.
