Expand Protections for Michigan’s Libraries & Library Workers
To: Sen. McBroom
From: A verified voter in Marquette, MI
March 6
I urge you to support a Senate version of HB 6034 and HB 6035 that not only protects Michigan’s public libraries and free speech but also expands protections for library workers and public school libraries.
Public libraries are essential for education and democracy, and these bills ensure fair policies for selecting, maintaining, and reviewing library materials while preventing politically motivated censorship.
HB 6034 requires that anyone challenging a book must have read it in full and live within the library’s service area, ensuring that outside groups cannot dictate what local communities can access. HB 6035 extends these protections to district libraries statewide, reinforcing local control over library collections.
However, library workers should not face harassment or job loss simply for upholding library policies and providing access to diverse materials. A Senate version of this legislation must include clear protections against intimidation and political interference.
Additionally, public school libraries face the same censorship threats as public libraries, yet they are excluded from these protections. Ensuring students have access to diverse, educational materials must be a priority.
As the Senate takes up library and education policy, I urge you to lead on this issue. A Senate version of HB 6034 and HB 6035 must not only protect public libraries but also defend library workers and public school libraries from unjust censorship and intimidation. Michigan must stand firmly against politically motivated book bans.
Thank you for your time and leadership.
