I am writing to express my concerns about the bill (SB 11) that would allow mandatory prayer time in Texas public schools. While the bill states that student participation would not be compulsory, the presence of an officially sanctioned prayer period could create an environment where students feel pressured or coerced to participate against their beliefs. Public schools should be welcoming places for students of all faiths and no faith. Instituting an explicit time for religious activities crosses a line and undermines the separation of church and state that is vital to a pluralistic society. Furthermore, students already have the ability to pray individually before or after school if they wish. There is no need for this unnecessary measure that threatens to marginalize certain students. I urge you to consider these issues and oppose SB 11 to preserve the neutrality of our public education system.
