More than 20 million Americans have gained more affordable health insurance thanks to the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits in the American Rescue Plan. This program has led to a record drop in the number of uninsured Americans, saving eligible enrollees an average of $705 a year—including many of your constituents.
If Congress fails to act and allows this program to expire at the end of the year, hardworking people will be forced to pay significantly more for coverage—or lose it entirely. Premium payments will rise by an average of 75%, with costs doubling in 12 states. In total, 4 million people will lose their insurance. We cannot allow this to happen.
This subsidy must be extended and made permanent. Senators Shaheen and Baldwin, along with Rep. Underwood, have introduced the Health Care Affordability Act to prevent these drastic cost increases. I urge you to join them and work to pass this bill as soon as possible—before insurers finalize their rates in the coming months.
