SHUTDOWN: The Need for a Strong DEM Response to GOP Dereliction of Duty

To: Rep. Jacobs, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in San Diego, CA

March 13

I am writing to express my deep concern over the current state of our government and the looming possibility of a shutdown. While I have never supported government shutdowns in the past and do not take this moment lightly, I believe we are in unprecedented times that demand an extraordinary response. The power of the purse—Congress’s most fundamental constitutional authority—has effectively been seized by the executive branch, with little to no accountability. The recent Supreme Court ruling granting the president sweeping immunity only exacerbates this crisis. Congress is an equal branch of government, yet its constitutional role is being systematically eroded. If this continues, we risk cementing a precedent where the legislative branch is subjugated to an unaccountable executive. I recognize that a shutdown would be painful for millions of Americans, and it is not an option I endorse lightly. However, if Republicans continue to abdicate their responsibilities and refuse to govern, then Democrats must take decisive action to force the country to reckon with this crisis. As Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rightly pointed out, if Republicans want to govern, they must govern. If they lack the votes, they must negotiate. Instead, they are engaging in performative obstruction while allowing the executive branch to consolidate power unchecked. The American people need to see the reality of this moment—our democracy is at stake, and Congress must reassert its constitutional role. If a shutdown is the only way to force accountability and demonstrate to the public the consequences of Republican dereliction, then Democrats must not shy away from that fight. This is not about partisan politics; it is about preserving the balance of power that defines our system of government. I urge you to take this crisis seriously and ensure that any actions taken—including the possibility of a shutdown—are framed clearly as a necessary response to Republican failure, not an abdication of Democratic responsibility. The stakes could not be higher. Thank you for your time and for your leadership in these challenging times.
