As a special education teacher, I am gravely concerned that these proposed $100 million cuts to education funding will dramatically impact the ability of students with disabilities to access a free and appropriate public education as legally required. Fully funding public education, including special education services and supports, is crucial for the future of our state and nation. The governor's proposed cuts are unacceptable and will severely undermine the quality of education for Ohio's students with diverse learning needs. These cuts will force many districts, including Columbus City Schools facing a $52 million reduction, to rely more heavily on local levies to make up the shortfall, shifting an unfair burden onto local taxpayers and exacerbating funding disparities between wealthier and poorer districts. The Fair School Funding Plan was intended to equitably distribute resources based on student needs, yet reverting to an outdated formula will negate those efforts and deprive districts, especially special education programs, of essential funding. Investing in education means investing in all children's futures. Adequately resourced schools can provide appropriate services, attract qualified special educators, and prepare students for success after graduation. Prioritizing education over cuts reflects our commitment to Ohio's youth with disabilities and their families. We cannot allow short-sighted budget decisions to undermine their legal rights and the promise of public education.
