I am writing concerning the President’s new tariffs and the disastrous effects they are having worldwide, in the United States and in Texas. U.S. stock indexes have already suffered their biggest one-day drops since 2020, vaporizing roughly $2 trillion in investor wealth. Those markets continue to decline. Rather than reducing the trade deficit, as intended, the tariffs have provoked retaliatory actions from other countries, leading to greater economic harm. Due to this financial instability, my wife and I are already being directly affected, with our 401K values plummeting. The Constitution’s separation of powers was written to prevent such a catastrophe as this. The President’s unilateral tariffs usurp Congress's exclusive taxation authority in violation of our nation’s founding principles Power of the purse was given to Congress. The Executive branch has circumvented that power. Congress must take that power back. It must intervene to safeguard the savings of millions of Americans. My wife and I urge you to do whatever is necessary to repeal these tariffs and protect the global economy. A handful of Republicans can stop this. Please be one of them. For the good of our nation's economic strength and household budgets, we urge you to fight these tariffs.
