Fund the Kansas Arts Commission

To: Rep. Smith, Gov. Kelly, Sen. Shallenburger

From: A constituent in Pittsburg, KS

March 21

I am writing to express my deep concern over the Kansas Senate’s decision to completely defund the Kansas Arts Commission (KAC). This unprecedented 100% budget cut effectively shuts down an agency that has been instrumental in supporting arts education, creative projects, and cultural initiatives across our state. While most agencies faced only a 3% reduction, eliminating KAC funding sends a troubling message about the value of the arts in Kansas. The arts are not just a luxury; they are a $4.6 billion industry in our state, supporting more than 41,000 jobs. Here in Pittsburg, KAC funding was set to help finance a $2,500 community mural project celebrating our town’s history. Without these grants, vital projects like this—projects that foster community pride, engagement, and economic activity—simply won’t happen. Public investment in the arts benefits all Kansans, from students who gain access to arts education to small businesses that thrive in creative economies. I urge you to advocate for the restoration of KAC funding as the budget moves into the Conference Committee. This is a critical moment to ensure that Kansas continues to support the arts and the many communities that rely on them. Thank you for your time and for your service to our district. I appreciate your consideration of this important issue and hope you will work to reinstate KAC funding. * * *
