The Take It Down Act poses a significant threat to free expression online. While the intent may be to address legitimate issues around nonconsensual intimate imagery, the current administration cannot be trusted to apply such laws fairly. History has shown this presidency will selectively enforce regulations to crack down on critics and shield allies from consequences. There are grave concerns the Act could be weaponized to censor lawful speech deemed unfavorable to the administration under the guise of combating deepfakes or other prohibited content. Handing such powerful takedown tools to an overtly corrupt regime puts online discourse and political dissent at risk of censorship. Until we have leadership committed to upholding free speech rights, attempting to legislate in this space is unwise and dangerous. Opposing the Take It Down Act is a necessary step to protect the open internet from further erosion under this administration.
