Parents should not be forced to be notified if their child is questioning their gender identity, as this poses serious risks to the child's safety and well-being. Many LGBTQ+ youth face rejection, abuse, and homelessness when their identity is disclosed without their consent.
Schools must prioritize protecting vulnerable students from harm. This misguided bill undermines children's privacy and autonomy over deeply personal matters.
Preferred pronouns and name is a personal experience that is protected constitutionally through freedom of expression and speech. There is also a medical consensus that respecting children on this issue is overall a life saving and healing process. Respect would include not outing them against their will. This will, over all, save children’s lives. Gender roles and expression need to be taught in order to avoid further stereotypes that carry into our next generations. This prevents bullying and harm towards other kids and improves mental and overall well-being. It is vital to create an affirmative environment where students can freely explore their identity without fear of discrimination or retaliation. The detrimental consequences of outing students against their will far outweigh any perceived parental rights arguments. I urge you to reject this harmful legislation that jeopardizes the welfare of Montana's youth.
