Do Not Pass the F.U.R.R.I.E.S. Act: Reject House Bill 4814
To: Rep. Paul, Sen. Middleton
From: A constituent in Friendswood, TX
April 1
House Bill 4814 aims to make behaviors and activities associated with the furry fandom illegal in public schools. One of the ways it aims to achieve this is by severely punishing school officials and school districts for allowing these behaviors in school. The code I'm most strongly against is teachers and school officials being charged with child abuse for allowing these behaviors.
I'm strongly opposed to this House Bill 4814 on the grounds that it restricts the expression of students and is unnecessarily discriminatory towards a group of people that simply have an unusual but unharmful hobby. Moreover, this bill presents several false narratives about the furry fandom including the use of litterboxes in schools as an accommodation for furries (i.e. members of the furry fandom) and presents the children who participate in the furry fandom as feral animals. These narratives are harmful to the image of the furry fandom and could be used to misrepresent the interests of children that take part of the fandom to the effect that they will be treated unfairly by their teachers and school officials. This is why I am opposed to House Bill 4814 and why I believe it should not be passed into law.
