Reinstate TPS visas for legal, financially sponsored immigrants

To: Rep. Mace, Sen. Scott, Sen. Graham

From: A verified voter in Summerville, SC

March 31

In January 2023, U.S. Homeland Security granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to residents of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. This status was approved through 2026, with plans to review it for extension depending on the humanitarian and political conditions in each country. Each participant in this program passed a rigorous background check, waived rights to U.S. government aid, and had a U.S.-based financial sponsor to cover the costs of their immigration. This program cost U.S. taxpayers zero dollars. After legal entry, parolees had to apply and pay a processing fee to receive a work permit and be eligible to work in the U.S. However, on March 29, 2025, U.S. Homeland Security unexpectedly terminated the parole status of over 160,000 participants, giving them less than 30 days to self-deport. Once this happens, their work permits and protected status will be revoked, leaving them in legal limbo and possibly undocumented. As of today, Haiti is in the middle of a gang war. The country has been named the most dangerous in the world, and its capital, Port-au-Prince, is under 70% gang control. The gangs control ports, roadways, and food distribution. Haitians are trapped in their homes, facing severe food insecurity and starvation. Sending Haitian parolees back to Haiti is effectively sending them to their deaths. You are my elected representative, and I, along with thousands of legal immigrants in your district, need your help. The current administration is taking action against an entire group of people without considering individual circumstances. Please take action today to speak up for those who cannot. This termination cannot stand.
