An Open Letter

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Rep. Riley, Sen. Schumer

From: A verified voter in Petersburg, NY

March 13

I am writing to express my deep and urgent concern regarding the impending overturning of the right to gay marriage. This is not merely an abstract legal debate—it is an attack on the civil rights and dignity of millions of Americans who have fought long and hard for the recognition and protection of their love. The right to marry the person you love is fundamental, and its reversal would signal a dangerous retreat from the progress we have made toward equality and justice. Overturning gay marriage would not only undo decades of hard-won civil rights but also set a precedent for further erosions of our constitutional guarantees. It is unacceptable that our democracy should allow such a blatant disregard for human rights. I urge you to stand firmly in defense of equality. Please work with your colleagues to oppose any legislative or judicial actions aimed at dismantling this essential right. We must ensure that the rights of all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation, are fully protected under the law. There is no room for complacency. The choices we make now will determine the future of our society. I implore you to act decisively in support of marriage equality and to hold those who seek to undermine our democratic values accountable. I look forward to your response and to seeing strong, principled action taken to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans.
