The decision by the Trump administration to revoke legal status for over 500,000 migrants who entered through the CHNV program is misguided and will result in immense suffering. This will upend lives and tear apart families by forcing those who followed proper legal channels into undocumented status. Many participants have built lives in American communities, contributing to society. Abruptly stripping their protections without reasonable transition periods shows lack of empathy. Rather than such cruel policies, Congress must pursue fair and humane immigration reform that provides pathways to permanent residency and accounts for human impact. Legitimate concerns around migration levels and security can be addressed through proper processing, not scorched earth termination that needlessly harms lives. Congress has a moral obligation to block this inhumane overreaction and protect CHNV migrants from unjust deportation.
