Opposition to the Privatization of Greenville’s Waste and Sanitation Services

To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Graham, Rep. Timmons

From: A constituent in Greenville, SC

March 26

Subject: Strong Opposition to the Privatization of Greenville’s Waste and Sanitation Services I am writing to express my adamant opposition to the proposed removal of Greenville’s public sanitation and waste services in favor of privatization. As a resident of District 25, I find it deeply concerning that this change will strip essential services from our community, particularly in areas that are lower-income and minority-majority. The selective nature of the coverage areas raises serious questions about whom this decision truly benefits—and whom it harms. I have firsthand experience with privatized trash collection from my time in Piedmont, South Carolina. It was an absolute disaster. There was no structured or reliable service—just an individual with a trailer and a cage around it. The limitations were unbearable: no bulk item pickup, no collection of yard debris, and strict requirements that placed an undue burden on residents. This is not an improvement. This is a downgrade. Greenville County’s sanitation system works for its residents, and if cost is an issue, reform it—don’t destroy it. Eliminating public waste services is reckless and irresponsible, and it will disproportionately harm the people who rely on it the most. This is yet another attack on the poor, and we see it for exactly what it is. We are tired of policies that strip resources from working-class communities while catering to the wealthy and well-connected. We vote here. You do not. Your continued opposition to the needs of your constituents does not go unnoticed. You barely secured your seat, and come midterms, the tide will turn. We will fight for representatives who actually fight for us. You may ignore our concerns now, but you will feel them at the ballot box. I urge you to stop this privatization effort immediately and work toward solutions that strengthen, not dismantle, public services. The people of District 25—and all of Greenville—deserve better than what you are attempting to force upon us.
