Oppose the SAVE act

To: Sen. Fischer, Rep. Bacon, Sen. Ricketts

From: A verified voter in Valley, NE

March 10

I am writing to you as a constituent who opposes the SAVE act. This is a wasteful redundant law that will cause more harm than good. It is already against the law for people who are not citizens to vote. We already have systems in place to prevent that. Our voting system is already robust and secure. So this bill would only cost taxpayer dollars and state employees time. I thought the whole current goal was to save money and make sure employees were effectively using their time. So to support this bill is in direct opposition to those goals. This bill should also cause more harm than good. Mainly for voters like me. Growing up, I had a deadbeat dad. He didn’t pay child support. He abandoned me and mother when I was two. My mother had to raise me herself. When I was in college, I realized my diploma would display my legal name. The deadbeat’s name. I wasn’t having it. So I legally changed my name to match that of my step father. Later in life, I got married. So, my last name has legally been changed twice. The SAVE act would require me to have not only my marriage license (which I have) but also the legal documents from my first name change. Those I don’t have. So I checked public records. They say directly on their website that they don’t have documents that are older than the late 90s. My first name change happened in the early 90s. How will you guarantee my right to vote as an American citizen? You could either help me find my court documents or you could oppose the SAVE Act. Because I won’t be the only one with issues like this. This bill directly impacts all married women who changed their names. Adopted people, or people who changed their name for other personal reasons. This act is redundant, wasteful, and discriminatory against people like me. Citizens. It will do nothing to secure our elections. If that was your focus, maybe put cybersecurity back on your priority list?
