Preserve DEI initiatives to uphold equity and inclusion

To: Sen. Brattin, Rep. Phelps, Gov. Kehoe

From: A constituent in Warrensburg, MO

March 25

In the interest of promoting principles of equity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all Missourians, the recent Executive Order 25-18 eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in state agencies raises significant concerns. While the aim of ensuring compliance with the constitutional principle of equal protection under the law is laudable, dismantling DEI initiatives risks undermining efforts to create a fair and inclusive environment for all citizens, regardless of their backgrounds or identities. DEI programs play a vital role in fostering a diverse and representative workforce, promoting understanding and respect among individuals from different backgrounds, and ensuring that state services and policies are designed to meet the needs of all communities equitably. By actively considering diversity, equity, and inclusion, state agencies can better identify and address systemic barriers, biases, and disparities that may exist within their structures and processes. The elimination of DEI programs and the prohibition on considering DEI factors in hiring decisions could inadvertently perpetuate inequalities and hinder the state's ability to attract and retain a talented and diverse workforce that reflects the rich diversity of Missouri's population. Furthermore, the removal of public funds for DEI-related initiatives may deprive state agencies of valuable resources and expertise needed to cultivate an inclusive and equitable environment for both employees and citizens. Therefore, it is requested that the administration reconsider the decision to eliminate DEI programs in state agencies. Instead, efforts should be made to strengthen and enhance these initiatives in a manner that aligns with constitutional principles while also proactively addressing issues of discrimination, bias, and systemic inequities. By embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion, Missouri can better serve the needs of all its citizens and ensure that every individual has an equal opportunity to thrive and contribute to the state's progress.
