It’s time for a progressive political party
To: Rep. Williams
From: A constituent in Atlanta, GA
March 24
I’m writing gratefully as a resident in your district to propose what I believe to be one of the greatest opportunities that progressives in this country have to finally grasp much needed political capital in D.C. I’ve been very impressed and felt represented by you as a progressive in Georgia by both your voting patterns and involvement with other congressional actions, such as signing on to the letter demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil. It is impossible to go through a single day without reading about the divide in the democratic party between establishment centrists that hold most of the leadership positions and the young progressive wing that is fighting for substantial change. I believe that now, more than ever, is the perfect time for the progressive wing of the democratic party to break off from that establishment and form their own party. Other third parties in the U.S. are largely worthless politically given their lack of held offices federally. A coalition of what I see to be a few dozen progressive voices in congress is more strength than any other third party has had in decades, and it’s clear that it would have the support of young voting blocks due to strong populist messaging. My reasoning around the timing is threefold. 1. Clearly, we are in dire times at the brink of oligarchy and fascism. Now more than ever progressive opposition and action is needed to ensure that the American experiment remains functioning for all. 2. The republicans hold a strong majority in all 3 branches of the federal government. Therefore, at least until the 2027 congress is sworn in, democratic party unity is a futile endeavor if that unity leads to minority power everywhere. Bluntly - I don’t think the democratic party needs your vote to enact legislation right now. This empowers you and other progressives. 3. Democratic approval ratings are at nearly an all time low. The party is not functioning as opposition and is being bludgeoned in the press and through the polls for not fighting for working people, for young people, and for the still oppressed peoples. Americans are looking for a change in leadership and a new third party could be received more favorably than ever before. I understand that the power of the democratic party, and further the two party system, is immense. I also understand that taking action such that I’ve described could jeopardize your position and your job as the establishment DNC bankrolls primary opponents for anyone that breaks off. What I will say, is that a coalition large enough to put the democratic party into a permanent minority position would be a group they would be forced to work with. I hope to spread this message to others in D.C. that see the same future for America that millions of us already do. Thank you so much for your time to read and consider this letter, and thank you again for your service and representation.
