I have been a teacher for 14 years, worked in special education, and have children that benefit from the services of a 504 and the gifted programs protected and funded by the Department of Education. The Education Department plays a vital role in ensuring equal access to quality education for all students. Eliminating it would undermine key initiatives that support vulnerable populations, such as Title I funding for high-poverty schools and Pell Grants that make college more affordable. Federal oversight is also critical for safeguarding civil rights and providing essential services like support for homeless students. Rather than dismantling the department, we should work to strengthen its ability to promote educational equity and opportunity across the nation. Preserving the Education Department is necessary to uphold our commitment to providing every child with the chance to learn and thrive.
