An Open Letter

SB 579 would prohibit cities and towns in West Virginia from establishing local anti-discrimination ordinances that go beyond the protections outlined in state law. This bill takes away the ability of local governments to respond to the needs of their communities and disregards the will of their constituents. At least 20 municipalities across the state have passed ordinances barring discrimination against LGBTQ individuals in areas like housing and employment, reflecting their values of inclusivity. Overturning these protections would undermine local governance and signal that discrimination is acceptable. Every West Virginian deserves to live free from discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Upholding local anti-discrimination ordinances fosters welcoming environments that allow people to thrive. I urge you to vote no on SB 579 and stand up for the dignity of all our citizens.
