The White House's decision to place all Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) staff on administrative leave and suspend grants and contracts is detrimental to libraries and museums across the nation. These institutions play a vital role in providing educational opportunities, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting lifelong learning for all Americans. By cutting off federal support, the administration is effectively denying access to invaluable resources and services that enrich communities economically, culturally, professionally, and socially. This action undermines the mandate set forth by Congress to fund and maintain IMLS programs that benefit the public good. Libraries and museums rely heavily on these grants to develop innovative programs, upgrade facilities, and expand collections. Suspending this essential funding stream will force difficult choices, potentially leading to reduced services, limited access to materials, and curtailed outreach efforts. We urge the administration to reconsider this decision and reinstate IMLS staff immediately. Libraries and museums are cornerstones of our society, and their continued operation should not be jeopardized for political reasons. Furthermore, we call on Congress to safeguard IMLS funding and ensure these institutions can continue to serve their communities without interruption. Protecting libraries and museums is paramount to preserving the principles of knowledge, culture, and equal opportunity that define our nation.
