Fabian Schmidt, a 34-year-old German national with a green card, has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for 17 days without clear charges or justification. He was arrested at Boston Logan Airport on March 7 after returning from a trip to Luxembourg. Officials have provided little transparency regarding the circumstances of his detainment, despite Schmidt being a lawful permanent resident who is entitled to due process. While past misdemeanor charges related to drug possession and a DUI have been cited, it remains unclear if these are the grounds for his current detention. The prolonged deprivation of liberty without formal charges or access to the legal process is a violation of Schmidt's fundamental rights. I urge you to demand that ICE either present formal charges against Schmidt or release him immediately. Lawful permanent residents must be afforded full due process protections, and detaining individuals indefinitely without charges is an unacceptable infringement on civil liberties. Schmidt's continued detention without justification undermines the principles of justice and fairness that are cornerstones of our legal system.
