I strongly support House Bill 122, which seeks to end Maryland’s participation in the 287(g) program. The collaboration between local agencies and federal immigration enforcement under 287(g) creates fear and discourages immigrant families from seeking help, reporting crimes, or cooperating with investigations. It undermines the foundational principle of equal protection under the law and places an undue burden on local resources. House Bill 122 would not only help protect civil liberties but also ensure that local law enforcement can focus on community safety rather than federal immigration enforcement.
