The state's financial crisis cannot be resolved through austerity measures that disproportionately burden working families and public sector employees. It is unjust to furlough teachers and frontline workers who have continued serving our communities throughout the pandemic. Instead, we must address the root cause - an inequitable tax system that allows corporations and the wealthy elite to hoard profits while shifting the burden onto the middle class. This is an opportune moment to champion real reform by raising revenue through higher taxes on big businesses and top income brackets. Those who have benefited the most from our economic system must pay their fair share to invest in the essential services that uplift all Washingtonians. The path forward lies in prioritizing the well-being of our people over corporate interests and embracing a more equitable distribution of the state's wealth and resources.
