I’m a parent and a concerned citizen who’s writing to ask you to speak out on behalf of Michiganders against the Department of Homeland Security’s new immigrant registration rule (DHS Docket No. USCIS-2025-0004), which is scheduled to go into effect on April 11, 2025.
This federal rule would require undocumented immigrants to register with the government and carry proof of registration—or face criminal penalties, detention, or deportation. While it’s framed as a matter of accountability or security, I believe it will cause real harm. It will make families in our state afraid to send their children to school, access medical care, or report crimes. It will force people further into the shadows and create fear where there should be trust.
I know this rule is being implemented at the federal level, but its effects will be felt in communities across Michigan. That’s why I hope you’ll join other state leaders in speaking out against it. I also urge you to do everything you can to make sure our state agencies and institutions are not complicit in enforcement practices that further harm immigrant communities.
My grandfather immigrated to the U.S. in the 1950s. He contributed significantly as a design engineer, developing commercial navigation equipment, typewriters, calculators, and telephone systems. He held eight U.S. patents and, in retirement, became known within his community as the “Clock Doc” for his exceptional skill in repairing clocks. His contributions—both big and small—were only possible because this country gave him the chance to belong. I want that same spirit of welcome to continue here in Michigan.
This rule doesn’t reflect the best of who we are. It reflects fear, not strength. It undermines our shared humanity and the values I know many in this state still hold dear. I hope you’ll stand up and speak out.
Thank you for your time and service.
