I’m writing to urge you to support Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s participation in the multistate lawsuit challenging the National Institutes of Health’s recent decision to cap indirect cost reimbursements on research grants at 15%.
This policy change is more than a budget shift—it poses a serious threat to Michigan’s research institutions and the thousands of jobs, medical advances, and economic benefits they sustain. Indirect costs cover the essential infrastructure that makes research possible: from lab maintenance to compliance oversight, from staffing to facility operations.
By arbitrarily slashing these reimbursements, the NIH is forcing universities and research centers across the country—especially in Michigan—to shoulder costs they cannot afford. That means fewer research opportunities, fewer discoveries, and fewer high-paying jobs in one of our state’s most critical sectors.
Attorney General Nessel’s challenge is not only about protecting science—it’s about protecting Michigan’s economy, workforce, and long-term competitiveness.
I urge you to speak out in support of her efforts and push back on this harmful policy.
