Trump's escalating threats towards Canada and his stated desire to make it the 51st state are deeply concerning. While unlikely to succeed, his reckless comments and actions are straining our critical relationship with our northern neighbor and closest ally. His flouting of international norms and trade agreements harms America's economic interests and standing in the world. We urge a return to stable, fact-based diplomacy that respects Canada's sovereignty. Inflammatory rhetoric only weakens us and distracts from substantive efforts to address legitimate trade issues through proper channels. Canada is not a state to be annexed, but a valued partner whose cooperation is vital on issues from border security to environmental protection. We must chart a more measured, lawful course in our dealings with this longstanding friend.
