An Open Letter

To: Sen. Fischer, Sen. Ricketts, Rep. Bacon

From: A constituent in Papillion, NE

March 11

I’m writing to voice my continued concern regarding DOGE’s access to my personal and sensitive information, and to demand that you put a stop to this unlawful access. At the Social Security Administration, it’s is currently unknown what level of access that DOGE has. Even with “read only” access, this group of computer programmers can sift through records of individuals' lifetime wages and earnings. They can view Social Security numbers, and the type and amount of benefits that workers receive. They can see data about those applying for Supplemental Security Income, including citizenship status, income, and payment amount. They can review disability and health status data on anyone who has applied for disability benefits. At the Department of Veterans Affairs, DOGE might have read-only access to veterans’ military records, notes about substance abuse and addiction, mental health issues, or therapy session notes. They could review personal information like addresses and phone numbers. DOGE’s level of access is unknown, which is alarming. At the CMS, DOGE had read-only access to the largest amount of data about the largest group of users of health care.   At the CFPB, DOGE has full access to personal data like names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and financial transactions. At all of these departments, this data used to be carefully guarded. It was compartmentalized, limiting access to persons on a need-to-know basis. And DOGE has access to all of it. The security walls don’t matter because DOGE can see it all. Despite “read-only” access, they could take pictures of the data, they could copy the data, they could move the data to other locations or feed it into AI programs. They could combine this data into one large database with details about every U.S. citizen. We don’t know, though, because we have no insight into how DOGE is using this information. There’s a genuine risk that this deeply and personal data could be stolen or shared. It could be used to steal a person’s identify, expose or discredit a person, steal hard-earned wages, sold on the dark web, or be used in other nefarious ways. This isn’t conjecture. Identity theft happens every day. People are doxxed and targeted every day. Why does DOGE need access to my Social Security Number? My address and age? My medical records? My income? My financial transactions? How does any of my deeply personal information help fight fraud? I don’t know and DOGE isn’t telling anyone anything besides “we’re fighting fraud!” We need transparency. We need concrete assurances - not lip service - that our personal information isn’t being shared or abused or used against us. Please shut down DOGE. Elon Musk has no right to my personal data…or anyone else’s in the United States.
