I am writing to express my deep concern about the growing uncertainty surrounding federal financial aid for students in California’s public universities. My spouse is one year away from completing his degree in accounting at California State University, Northridge, and we are increasingly alarmed by the possibility that financial aid may not be available to support his final year of study.
California’s future depends on the students enrolled in the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems—students who will become the accountants, doctors, lawyers, park rangers, nurses, teachers, emergency service workers, and countless other professionals our state needs. These students should not have to worry about whether they will be able to complete their degrees due to financial aid shortfalls.
As the Chancellor of the CSU system, Governor Gavin Newsom must ensure that California has a contingency plan in place to protect its students should federal financial aid become unavailable or insufficient. Our state has long prided itself on making higher education accessible, and now more than ever, we need strong leadership to reaffirm that commitment.
I urge you to work with Governor Newsom and legislative leaders to develop a solution that safeguards California’s students from financial uncertainty. This is not just about individual students—it is about the future of our workforce, our communities, and our state’s economic stability.
Please provide reassurance that California will take proactive steps to ensure its students are not left without support. I look forward to hearing from you on what actions are being taken to address this urgent issue.
