I am writing to express my deep concern regarding President Donald Trump's recent executive order to dismantle the Department of Education1. As a citizen who values the importance of education, I believe that this decision could have severe consequences for our nation's students and the future of our educational system.
The Department of Education plays a crucial role in ensuring equal access to quality education for all students, regardless of their background. It oversees vital programs such as student loans, Pell grants, and Title I funding, which support low-income students, students of color, students with disabilities, and rural students1. The elimination of the department would jeopardize these essential services and put millions of students at risk.
Furthermore, the department is responsible for enforcing civil rights laws in educational institutions, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn in a safe and inclusive environment. Dismantling the department would undermine these protections and could lead to increased discrimination and inequality in our schools.
While the executive order does not completely eliminate the department, it significantly reduces its size and scope, which will inevitably impact its ability to function effectively1. The proposed changes would make it nearly impossible for remaining employees to carry out their work, much like what has been done with the U.S. Agency for International Development.
I urge you to oppose this executive order and work to protect the Department of Education. Our students deserve a robust and well-funded educational system that supports their growth and development. The future of our nation depends on the quality of education we provide to our children.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I hope you will take action to ensure that the Department of Education continues to serve the needs of all students.
