Action Needed to Address Illegal Arrest and Detainment of Mahmoud Khalil

To: Rep. Houchin, Sen. Young, Sen. Banks

From: A constituent in Bloomington, IN

March 12

I write to you today with grave concern regarding the illegal arrest and detainment of Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder and participant in a peaceful protest at Columbia University. Mr. Khalil was exercising one of the most fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution—the right to free speech and peaceful assembly. His arrest is not only a violation of his rights but also a direct affront to the principles of democracy and justice that our nation holds dear. As Americans, we pride ourselves on protecting the right to free speech, even when we disagree with the views being expressed. Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of civic engagement and a vital mechanism for holding our government accountable. The arrest of an individual for participating in such actions is a dangerous precedent that undermines the very fabric of our democracy. Equally troubling is the broader pattern of disregard for the rule of law and due process under this administration. The President’s repeated claims that the election was rigged in his favor, captured on camera multiple times, call into question the legitimacy of his leadership and the integrity of our electoral system. Our democracy is worth more than this. It is imperative that Congress take a stand to protect the rights of all individuals, including those like Mr. Khalil, who seek to participate in our democracy through peaceful civic action. I urge you to take immediate action to investigate Mr. Khalil’s arrest and ensure that his rights are fully restored. Furthermore, I call on Congress to hold this administration accountable for its repeated violations of the rule of law. If necessary, I encourage you to pursue impeachment proceedings and explore all available avenues to restore faith in our democratic institutions. The American experiment is at a crossroads. We cannot allow greed, corruption, or the erosion of our constitutional rights to dictate our future. This is your shot to take a stand for justice, accountability, and the preservation of our democracy. I implore you to act with courage and conviction. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your response and to seeing your leadership in defending the rights and values that make our nation great.
