Independence of our government

To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Goldman, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Fort Worth, TX

March 29

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent executive orders issued by President Donald Trump targeting prominent law firms, including WilmerHale, Jenner & Block, and Perkins Coie. These orders, which impose punitive measures such as suspending security clearances, terminating federal contracts, and restricting access to federal buildings, represent a clear violation of constitutional principles and threaten the foundations of our legal system. The executive orders explicitly cite the employment of attorneys who have been involved in investigations or litigation against the president as justification for these actions. This retaliatory nature is evident and deeply troubling, as it undermines the First Amendment rights to free speech and association, as well as the due process protections enshrined in the Fifth and Sixth Amendments. Federal judges have already blocked portions of these orders, recognizing their unconstitutional nature and the chilling effect they have on legal advocacy and representation. The implications of these actions are profound. By targeting law firms for their associations and legal work, the administration is attempting to coerce attorneys into renouncing their clients and causes, thereby compromising the integrity of the legal profession. This not only hampers the ability of individuals and businesses to access legal representation but also sets a dangerous precedent for the misuse of executive power to silence dissent and opposition. As members of Congress, you have a responsibility to uphold the Constitution and protect the independence of the legal system. I urge you to take the following actions: 1. Investigate the Executive Orders: Conduct a thorough inquiry into the legality and motivations behind these orders to ensure accountability and transparency. 2. Safeguard Legal Advocacy: Enact legislation to protect law firms and attorneys from retaliatory actions that undermine their ability to represent clients and causes. 3. Reaffirm Constitutional Principles:Issue a bipartisan statement condemning these orders and reaffirming the importance of the First Amendment and the rule of law. The strength of our democracy lies in its commitment to justice, fairness, and the protection of individual rights. By addressing these concerns, Congress can reaffirm its dedication to these principles and ensure that the legal system remains independent and impartial. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to your leadership in safeguarding the values that define our nation.
