Support comprehensive Title IX reform for safe campuses

To: Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Moolenaar, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Rockford, MI

April 3

The recent court ruling requiring a return to the 2020 Trump-era Title IX regulations raises significant concerns about protecting students and providing a fair process. The requirement for live hearings with cross-examination places an undue burden on victims and discourages reporting of sexual misconduct cases. This confrontational approach favors the accused and undermines the intent of Title IX to prevent sex-based discrimination. Additionally, narrowing the jurisdiction to exclude incidents occurring off campus fails to account for the realities of modern education. Students deserve protection regardless of where an incident may occur. I urge you to advocate for a Title IX process that is trauma-informed, centered on supporting all students, and reflects best practices in addressing sexual violence on campuses. Reverting to outdated policies ultimately undermines efforts to create safe and inclusive learning environments. Comprehensive reform is needed to uphold the fundamental principles of Title IX.
