Please help protect us from the damaging effects of tarrifs
To: Rep. Balderson, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted
From: A constituent in Coshocton, OH
April 4
I am writing as a concerned constituent and engaged citizen to express my deep concern regarding the imposition of widespread tariffs and the lasting harm such measures could inflict on the American economy and our international relationships. Currently the World is ridiculing us because the President included uninhibited islands in his tarrif plans. Comments about penguins are trending around the globe. The World is also starting to question the sanity of the President, and that is making us look bad. I have family and friends in the media in other countries and they questioning the President's assertion that April 2nd was "The greatest day in American history". Some are saying that President Trump was being sarcastic, others are concerned that he meant what he said. All studied history in high school and know that there are many other times in our great nations history that would beat a day when tariffs were announced. While protecting American industries is an important objective, sweeping tariffs often lead to unintended consequences that ripple through our economy. Tariffs act as taxes on imported goods, raising costs for American businesses and consumers alike. Small businesses, manufacturers, and farmers in particular face increased prices on raw materials and components, making them less competitive in both domestic and global markets. Consumers ultimately bear the burden, facing higher prices and fewer choices. Furthermore, tariffs often provoke retaliatory actions from our trading partners. These trade wars not only reduce American exports but also strain our diplomatic relationships, weakening the alliances that are vital to our national security and global influence. Instead of fostering economic independence, broad tariffs risk isolating us from key global supply chains and strategic partnerships. The United States has long been a leader in promoting open, rules-based trade. To abandon that position now would signal a shift away from cooperation and stability at a time when the world is already facing economic uncertainty. I urge you to consider policies that support American workers and industries without compromising our economic health or international standing. Strategic investments in innovation, education, and fair-trade enforcement offer more sustainable and less disruptive alternatives. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical issue. I respectfully ask you to advocate for measured, thoughtful trade policies that protect American interests without undermining the foundations of our economy or our global leadership.
