Urgent Concerns: Presidential Actions Undermining Constitutional Principles

To: Sen. Mullin, Rep. Bice, Sen. Lankford

From: A constituent in Edmond, OK

March 18

I am writing to express my deep concern over a series of actions taken by President Trump since his inauguration on January 20, 2025. These actions raise serious legal and moral concerns that threaten our democracy and core American values. 1. Defiance of Judicial Authority and Unlawful Deportations The President’s decision to deport suspected Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador, despite a federal court order halting the deportations, is both illegal and unconstitutional. Ignoring a court order violates the principle of separation of powers and the rule of law. No president has the right to act above judicial authority. Deporting individuals without due process further strips them of their constitutional and human rights, undermining the very justice system he swore to uphold. 2. Termination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs On his first day back in office, President Trump terminated all federal DEI programs, calling them discriminatory. However, these programs exist to address historic and systemic inequities in hiring, contracting, and workplace accessibility. Eliminating them ignores our moral duty to create fair opportunities and protect marginalized groups. It also disregards legal frameworks like the Civil Rights Act, which mandates nondiscrimination and equal access. 3. International Backlash and Economic Implications of Expansionist Threats President Trump’s threats to annex Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Gaza are reckless and immoral, violating international law and the sovereignty of other nations. Such imperial ambitions not only invite global condemnation but also damage America’s diplomatic standing and economy—as evidenced by growing boycotts of American goods. These actions signal a disregard for global stability and peaceful cooperation. 4. Erosion of Constitutional Checks and Balances By invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to justify deportations without due process, President Trump attempted to bypass constitutional protections, specifically the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. No president should wield outdated wartime powers to target groups based on national origin or political labeling. This tactic is both immoral and illegal, creating dangerous precedents for stripping individuals of their rights on executive whim. Conclusion These actions reflect a disturbing pattern of disregard for law, morality, and democratic values. I urge you to hold the executive branch accountable and protect the constitutional principles that define our nation. Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response.
