I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which seeks to expand federal control over elections and impose restrictive measures on voter registration. This order not only undermines the foundational principles of state sovereignty in election administration but also threatens the voting rights of millions of Americans.
The executive order directs the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration, a measure that disproportionately affects individuals without easy access to such documents. It also penalizes states that accept ballots arriving after Election Day by withholding federal funds, further complicating the electoral process. Additionally, the involvement of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in reviewing voter registration lists raises serious concerns about federal overreach and the potential for disenfranchisement.
Voting is a sacred right and cornerstone of our democracy. Any attempt to interfere with this right, whether through federal mandates or bureaucratic hurdles, must be met with unwavering opposition. The executive order's purported justification of preventing election fraud is not supported by evidence, as instances of noncitizen voting are exceptionally rare. Instead, this order appears to be a calculated effort to suppress voter participation and centralize power.
I urge Congress to take immediate action to oppose this executive order and protect the integrity of our electoral system. The federal government should support states in conducting fair and accessible elections, not impose measures that hinder the democratic process.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I trust that you will stand firm in defense of the rights of all Americans.
