The Trump Administration's recent executive order to cease operations at the Institute of Museum and Library Services poses a severe threat to libraries and museums across the country. This would eliminate crucial federal funding that enables libraries to provide invaluable services to their communities. In Michigan alone, the impact would be profound - from disrupting the lending of over 1 million books through the Michigan Electronic Library to jeopardizing grants that allow libraries to upgrade infrastructure and purchase essential resources like bookmobiles. These assets are vital, especially in rural areas and for those without easy access to libraries. Despite its minuscule 0.0043% share of the federal budget, the IMLS funding goes a long way in promoting education, culture and equitable access to knowledge. I urge you to take immediate action to protect this institute and prevent devastating cuts that would undermine libraries and museums nationwide.
