Reject Ohio Senate Bill 1, Uphold Academic Freedom
To: Rep. Dovilla
From: A verified voter in Berea, OH
March 17
Protecting free speech and academic freedom is crucial for fostering an environment of learning and critical thinking on college campuses. Senate Bill 1 undermines these fundamental principles by imposing overly broad and vague restrictions. Gutting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives would be detrimental, potentially eliminating programs benefiting underrepresented groups like military veterans, those with disabilities, and survivors of human trafficking. Banning the discussion of so-called "controversial beliefs or policies" is an unconstitutional overreach that could lead to the censorship of vital topics such as climate change or civil rights. This bill solves no problems but creates numerous issues that threaten the ability of higher education institutions to properly educate students. Preserving unrestricted inquiry and open discourse should be the priority. I urge you to reject Senate Bill 1 and uphold the First Amendment rights of Ohio's students and faculty.
