I’m reaching out to express deep concern about the damaging impacts of recent NOAA/NWS layoffs under President Trump. Lives are at risk due to these cuts, and the fallout is already visible.
Some key points:
• The NWS is world-renowned: A unique blend of government &private sector collaboration that has served as a model for other countries. Our tax dollars have already paid for these systems that corporate entities are trying to steal &sell back to us for a profit. Private weather companies will tell you they can’t do what they do without NOAA and the NWS.
• The ROI for NOAA is among the highest in the federal government, benefiting numerous industries: aviation, emergency services, transportation, agriculture, & many more. Anything that has a supply chain is in danger.
• Current layoffs are hurting NWS operations:
◦ Gray, ME NWS office is critically understaffed & has suspended radiosondes, impacting forecast accuracy.
◦ Weather forecast models are dependent on NOAA’s data—without it, private companies, TV stations, and weather apps will also fail.
◦ Staff reductions are already impairing vital systems like watches, warnings, and weather radar. This puts all of our safety at risk.
• Irreparable damage: Once these systems fail, they cannot be easily rebuilt unless the staff is put back in place immediately.
I urge you to take action to stop this reckless dismantling of our weather infrastructure.
