An Open Letter

To: Rep. Sessions, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Waco, TX

March 12

There is no way to convince you to wake up and come to the aid of working families and citizens of Texas. Your history of voting has largely shown an ignorance of people, in favor of a show of allegiance to party leaders. "Party over people" seems to be the ethos of Texas' representative bodies, over these many years. But, as the economy shows increasing signs of a crisis, and as the culture war edges on the GOP taking an unpopular stance on nearly every political issue, I am writing to urge you to recuse yourself or openly vote "No" on the continuing resolution. The cuts laid out in the presented bill are almost completely to line items that affect rural populations, of which Texas has many. FEMA cuts to recovery aid, slashes to rural broadband subsidies, alongside cuts to election security, which is and should be a hallmark of our nation (and one you have personally spoken in defense of), all while granting more power to an Executive Branch that is now so overpowered, I am not sure that Congress could stop him from declaring war, at this point. Yes, it's a brave gesture, to vote against the Resolute Desk; but bravery and Texas have been synonyms since 1836, when the Republic of Texas was founded. I am begging you to cross the aisle and get a deal that isn't a stopgap and asks both sides of the political aisle to meet in the middle of all requests in a budget and arrive at the compromise that best benefits the citizens you were elected to represent.
