Congress must fight back

To: Rep. Moore, Sen. Justice, Sen. Capito

From: A verified voter in Inwood, WV

March 24

The U.S. government's decision to deny entry to a French scientist solely based on personal opinions expressed in private communications is deeply concerning and violates core democratic values of free speech and academic freedom. This overstep by border authorities sets a dangerous precedent that threatens open discourse and the free exchange of ideas vital to scientific progress. Preventing qualified researchers from attending academic conferences due to ideological disagreements with the current administration's policies undermines America's global standing as a hub for innovation and intellectual inquiry. It also strains valuable research partnerships and collaborations across borders that drive discoveries benefiting society. Congress must uphold constitutional protections and reassert its oversight role to prevent further abuses of executive overreach infringing on civil liberties. Unwarranted screening of personal communications and using them as grounds for entry denial is an unacceptable overreaction that damages America's reputation as a bastion of free thought and expression. Swift action is needed to rein in these disturbing practices and reaffirm our nation's commitment to cherished democratic ideals.
