I am writing to commend the Senate for passing S. J. Res. 37, ending this fake national emergency and revoking Trump’s power to pass tariffs.
I urge the House to do everything possible to pass it as well, including reaching out to the majority party to persuade them. This is what checks and balances look like and all of our leaders must fight against these bad-faith, unethical, and unconstitutional actions by Trump. These tactics must end and Congress must do its part! There’s no question these tariffs against Canada, as well as the new tarrifs are essentially a tax on ordinary Americans. And a misguided attempt to isolate the US from its allies and weaken our economic and political power. Trump, Musk, and the other elites are following a disturbing, nihilistic policy of isolationism that will only benefit billionaire investors. We can and should build up American manufacturing. The government can enact a long-term plan of tax cuts and other policies to help America develop raw materials, increase manufacturing, and create business for retail stores, particularly local businesses. My father was the President of J. P. Stevens, an American textile company that fought hard to save jobs in the US by supporting the American textile industry through the Buy American campaign. I would love to see more of that. These tariffs are not going to magically help American businesses though, only hurt consumers! I am proud of you and all our Connecticut leaders in government (as well as your staff) fighting the good fight. Keep it up!
