Save Department of Education!

To: Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly, Rep. Stanton

From: A verified voter in Phoenix, AZ

March 20

I am writing to urge you to take a firm and immediate stand against President Donald Trump’s unconstitutional executive order promising to shutter the Department of Education. As you know, a president does not have the unilateral authority to eliminate a federal department established by Congress. Such an action requires legislative approval, which Trump does not have. The Department of Education plays a critical role in ensuring equal access to quality education, protecting students’ civil rights, and supporting schools across the country. Dissolving it would devastate public education, harming students, teachers, and families alike—particularly in underserved communities. Beyond the immediate threat to education, this effort reflects a dangerous pattern of authoritarian overreach. A president who disregards constitutional limits and bypasses Congress to dismantle fundamental institutions is a direct threat to democracy. As my representative, I implore you to: 1 Publicly denounce any attempt to dissolve the Department of Education. 2 Rally bipartisan congressional opposition to ensure no such action gains momentum. 3 Protect the integrity of our democratic institutions by upholding the separation of powers. Now, more than ever, we need representatives who will stand up for democracy and prevent an executive branch from abusing its authority. I urge you to act decisively. I look forward to your response and to seeing you take action on this critical issue.
