Retain mask choice for vulnerable subway riders during pandemic

To: Gov. Hochul, Assembly Member Bores, Sen. Krueger

From: A constituent in New York, NY

April 1

The consideration to ban face masks on New York City subways disregards valid public health concerns and enables a moral panic that restricts freedom of expression while undermining COVID-19 safety measures. A blanket prohibition ignores the necessity of masks for vulnerable individuals at heightened risk from the ongoing pandemic. This reactionary proposal, motivated by isolated incidents of hate speech rather than widespread criminal behavior enabled by masks, is an overreach that jeopardizes personal choice and protection for riders. Fostering an environment guided by science and personal risk assessment, not alarmist policies, remains the wisest path to keep New Yorkers safe while preserving civil liberties during this public health crisis.
