The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is a critical agency that supports vital educational and cultural institutions across the nation. Libraries and museums serve as invaluable community resources, providing access to knowledge, promoting literacy, offering job assistance, and fostering lifelong learning opportunities. Eliminating federal funding for the IMLS would undermine these essential services and deprive millions of Americans, especially in rural areas, of access to invaluable resources and programming. As a museum professional, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that museums and libraries have on fostering a well-informed and culturally enriched society. These institutions play a pivotal role in preserving our shared heritage, cultivating curiosity, and empowering individuals to explore new horizons. Defunding the IMLS would represent a regressive step that fails to recognize the immense societal value these institutions contribute. Therefore, I implore you to take a stand in protecting the IMLS and its modest federal funding. Libraries and museums are cornerstones of our communities, and their continued support is crucial for nurturing an educated, engaged, and culturally vibrant nation. An attack on these institutions is an attack on the very foundations of knowledge, enlightenment, and personal growth. Let us unite in safeguarding these invaluable resources for current and future generations.
