I am writing to express my deep frustration with the Democratic Party’s lack of strategic vision and compelling leadership. As a member of your constituency, I expect more than reactionary politics and vague platitudes. While Senator Slotkin has rightfully stated that “We can’t just be against something. We have to be for something,” I see little evidence that Democrats in Congress—yourself included—have clearly articulated what you are for.
Not even a majority of Democratic voters believe Democrats in Congress are doing a good job. A Quinnipiac poll recently registered the highest percentage of voters with an unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party since the question was first asked. That should be a wake-up call. Instead of coalescing around a clear, purpose-driven identity, the party remains a muddled collection of disparate ideas that fail to inspire, unite, or differentiate from the alternative.
Every successful movement, organization, or brand has a purpose-driven identity. It is not just about messaging—it is about defining and committing to a core vision that informs every action and communication. A strong Democratic brand must:
Tell a simple and compelling story about what is wrong in America and how to fix it.
Inspire a majority of Americans.
Unite the party under a common purpose.
Clearly differentiate from Republicans.
Build on existing strengths while addressing key weaknesses.
Provide a coherent framework that drives all policy and messaging decisions.
Until Democrats define and commit to this strategic purpose, they will continue to drift, failing both their voters and the country. The stakes are too high for rudderless leadership. It is time to articulate a vision, rally people around it, and prove that Democrats stand for something more than just being the lesser evil.
