The untimely death of Jessica Aber, the former US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, is highly suspicious and demands immediate investigation from Congress. Aber was found dead in her home on Saturday at the age of 43. Authorities have not released a cause of death. Importantly, Aber’s duties at ED-VA included prosecuting Russian nationals for war crimes tied to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That made her an enemy of the Putin regime. I surely do not have to remind you that enemies of Putin have an uncanny tendency to turn up dead. Russia’s track record of assassinations on foreign soil is long and brutal, and involves a diverse range of methods, from bullets to polonium to military-grade neurotoxin. In recent years, these attacks have grown increasingly bold and blatant, hitting targets in the UK, Austria, Turkey and Germany. With a pliable puppet installed in the White House, it is not paranoid to think that Putin may have expanded such operations to the United States. We do not know why Jessica Aber died. She was reported on Fox News to have had (unspecified) health problems for a while, but there are many poisons that can kill by slow accumulation in the body. A medical examiner who is not trained in what to look for could easily dismiss such an assassination as death by natural causes. For this reason, it is essential for Congress to investigate quickly, before the physical evidence is destroyed. The Trump administration cannot be trusted to treat this case with the gravity it deserves. Aber’s body must be examined by experts who could identify the signs of poisoning if they are present. Congress should use its subpoena powers to maintain careful oversight over the case, making sure that all evidence is properly gathered and reviewed. Perhaps, when all is said and done, it will be found that Jessica Aber’s death really was just an unfortunate happenstance. Or perhaps it is the first attack by the Putin regime on his enemies in the United States. Either way, the American people (and Jessica’s family) deserve to know the truth, and a Congressional investigation is the only way we are likely to get it.
