Protect Judicial Independence and Rule of Law

To: Rep. Hoyer, Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks

From: A constituent in North Beach, MD

March 26

Urgent: Protect Judicial Independence and the Rule of Law Dear [Senator Van Hollen/Senator Alsobrooks/Representative Hoyer], I am writing to express my deep concern over recent statements and actions from Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and other congressional leaders suggesting the elimination of federal courts and the impeachment of judges who rule against former President Donald Trump. These unprecedented threats to judicial independence undermine the foundational principles of our democracy and pose a grave danger to the rule of law. What is even more alarming is the escalating danger faced by judges and their families, who are being threatened and targeted simply for doing their jobs—upholding the Constitution and protecting our democracy. The willingness of some leaders to fuel this environment of intimidation and hostility is unconscionable and must be condemned in the strongest terms. Speaker Johnson’s remarks about abolishing district courts, coupled with impeachment articles targeting U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, amount to a blatant attempt to intimidate the judiciary for performing its constitutional duty. Judges must be free to interpret and apply the law without fear of political retribution or personal threats to their safety. Chief Justice John Roberts has rightfully condemned these threats as inappropriate responses to judicial decisions. Yet, the push to strip funding and restructure the courts continues, driven by partisan motives rather than a genuine effort to address judicial misconduct or inefficiency. I urge you to take a strong and unequivocal stance against these assaults on our judiciary and to publicly denounce the reckless rhetoric that endangers the lives of judges and their families. Please work with your colleagues to protect the independence of our courts and ensure that no judge is threatened or punished for upholding the Constitution. Thank you for your continued commitment to the rule of law and our democratic values. I look forward to your leadership in standing up against these dangerous efforts.
